A whole gust of big Sony PlayStation Black Friday sales and E3 announcements might give the illusion that the PS5 is getting closer than ever, but in reality we're still probably some way off anything being officially announced or revealed.

PS5 Touchscreen Dual-Shock Controller Sony patent reveals big PS4 controller change for playstation 5

Although, patents, which are submitted months, sometimes years in advance, do give us a pretty hint of work going on behind the scenes at these huge tech companies and most precisely their R&D departments. And one of the latest patents found may provide some small interior into what Sony are planning for their next-gen Dualshock controller, which we would imagine is being readied for the new PS5 Console.

This new patent and information was submitted by Sony Interactive Entertainment, to the United States Patent Office and discovered by Reddit user AlphaFoxWarfare.

And from what we can enumerate, it sounds as though the new gaming controller will have some sort of touchscreen display, sounds ridiculous right?. Need more info? Take a quick look at the official wording on the patent:

  • A controller for interfacing wirelessly with a computing device is provided, including the following: a housing defined by a main body, a first extension extending from a first end of the main body, and a second extension extending from a second end of the main body, the first extension and the second extension for holding by a first hand and a second hand of a user, respectively; a touchscreen defined along the top surface of the main body between the first extension and the second extension; a first set of buttons disposed on the top surface of the main body proximate to the first extension and on a first side of the touchscreen; and a second set of buttons disposed on the top surface of the main body proximate to the second extension and on a second side of the touchscreen.

It'll certainly be interesting to see how Sony could utilise the touchscreen on the Dual-shock controller, but whether PlayStation can actually make a success of the pad is totally another question entirely obscure.

According to The Verge, controllers which have included a touchscreen haven't exactly been a hit with fans in the past years.

Both the Nintendo Wii U, going even further back the Sega Dreamcast both tried and failed with the same idea.

News of this new Sony Dual-shock controller comes, staggeringly, not that long after yet another Sony controller was revealed prematurely via another patent.

Only last time it was for a PlayStation VR controller.

The patent, was titled “CONTROLLER HAVING LIGHTS DISPOSTED ALONG A LOOP OF THE CONTROLLER”, was registered by Sony Interactive Entertainment Japan in the few weeks ago.

To all engrosses and purposes, the new patent will be an upgrade of the current PSVR Move controller, with more sensors in a loop, rather than the ball that's located at the top of the PS Move currently. This new controller seems to be built from the ground up for VR, featuring similarities to controllers from Oculus and HTC Vive, rather than building on the old PS Move tech that Sony used for PSVR.

What's your opinion on this? What'd you want to see in PS5 Dual-shock Controller? Let's hear your thoughts in the comments below.
